Facial Recognition and Disabilities

How does TouchByte encourage inclusivity?

If we’ve learnt anything from 2020, it’s that inclusivity should be at the forefront of every companies’ agenda.

In previous updates, I’ve begun to tear down misconceptions and myths surrounding facial recognition and race, gender, and privacy.

We’ve learnt that AI isn’t capable of being racist; you simply need to train your algorithm to identify a range of different faces and ethnicities.

We’ve also identified that facial recognition is designed to create a safer environment for customers, not to invade your privacy. It’s like CCTV, which I’m sure you rarely notice on a day-to-day basis.

So, now it’s about time I explained how TouchByte are creating inclusive, accessible solutions for both able-bodied people, and those with disabilities

One key issue that a wide range of facial recognition applications face, is that they are stationed at one specific height, usually at an ‘average’ height.

Our camera modules, which are used to grant access to faces in spaces, have been positioned specifically to identify people of different heights; ranging from shorter people, to wheelchair users, to taller people.

We use fish-eyed lenses, to ensure that we can capture the widest range of heights as possible.

In the hospitality sector, we’ve worked with hotels to ensure that our technology can adapt to cater to the requirements of disability-friendly rooms.

We station multiple consoles at a variety of different heights outside the room, so that both wheelchair users and able-bodied individuals can access their spaces with ease.

Our contactless technology also aids those who aren’t able to physically reach out and touch a button to open a door, or use a key-card.

We don’t discriminate. We aim to be as inclusive as possible, meaning that our technology can be used by everybody.
